It was no accident or cooincidence that Lee Iacocca and his team at Ford picked
out the "Mustang" as the name for their new design. They had others to choose
from including "Puma", "Cougar", "Colt", "Cheetah" and "Special Falcon".
The P-51 was a winner and
Ford certainly tapped into that name recognition. By April 17, 1965, one year
after the debut of the Ford Mustang, over 417,000 cars were delivered!
By silly comparison, only 15,486 P-51s were built over a time of 5 years. Of
course the P-51 is far more complex than the Ford Mustang even if you could find
enough buyers.
