This one is a long shot: maybe "Crazy Horse", 44-84745. The plane was registered N5439V from 1963 to 1982 before being rebuilt as a TF-51D. Cheers Marc

HINT: In 1974, this P-51 was rebuilt in Chino and another southern Cal city. N5???V was the reg. before the current reg.

Let's have another go: What about 45-11540, now N151W, "Excalibur" with Jim Reed. This Mustang is currently a blue-noser, was N5162V before, but I don't know if it was rebuilt in 1974 or not.
