According to one gentleman who saw it around the time it arrived in PA the blue paint job was applied around 1970-71. To the best of my knowledge it kept those colors until crashing in 1979.

Ref: Mr. Johansen's posting, I think this aircraft was based in Eufaula, AL until it crashed on takeoff in 1979 or 1980. I don't know the N or serial number, but a P-51 with an identical solid dark blue paint scheme with multi-colored spinner was owned by a local crop duster. Eyewitnesses said he started his signature barrel roll after takeoff, and was about halfway through when he entered an overcast layer. The airplane came out of the layer at a steep nosedown attitude and impacted within a mile of the runway. It shared hangar space with another P-51, the 'Kenworth Special', which I think was flown in one of the stock level races at Reno by Mac McClain shortly before he died. As a 16 year old student pilot, it was always a thrill to see those two airplanes stabled together.
Case Closed!
